Internet Safety - Protecting Digital Identities & Data

Things to consider about online privacy and security:

- A strong password helps protect someone from hacking you and getting ahold of your personal information.

- Information that is "ok" to share about you online is...

    1) Your first name or a made-up name

    2) Your educational ideas and lesson plan ideas

    3) Pictures that do not have anything controversial or do not have any of your students in them

- Clickbait is when a headline, URL, website, or social media post looks appropriate but turns out to be inappropriate or unsafe once it is clicked on and opened. You can avoid it by ensuring URLs have HTTPS, .org, .gov, etc. Use your personal judgement on if a headline or website sounds appropriate. If you are unsure, do not click on it or use it.

- Companies collect and use data about you when you watch advertisements or when you sign up for a website and put your personal information in. There are privacy rights, but your information is still given to these companies and platforms.

- You can protect your privacy by checking your privacy settings, thinking twice before posting anything, and keeping your personal information and opinions out of your posts.

Kindergarten Lesson Plan - Media Balance is Important

Video: Media Balance for Kindergarten

This lesson is age appropriate and provides an opportunity for Kindergarteners and their teachers/parents to discuss boundaries for being online and having a balance between when to be on a device and when to get off it and go outside or go to sleep. The teacher can have students sit on the carpet and give them scenarios of good and bad behavior online and students will need to determine if the situation is a student practicing good balance or bad balance while being online.

The objectives are relevant, and the vocabulary is explained in the eyes of a kindergartener. The lesson keeps students engaged whether they are singing the song or analyzing scenarios the teacher gives them. I think the lesson could benefit by having immediate teacher feedback such as the scenario idea when students sit on the carpet and the teacher tells them if they are correct on if the student in the scenario practices good internet behavior and balance. I think parent involvement is crucial in this lesson as well and students should go home and establish a plan on how to stay safe and maintain balance at home with technology as well.
